I would like you to meet Judy and her Etsy shop: YayBeads .
If you love finding great finds for your unique jewelry creations, then you will love the items at YayBeads .
Let’s get to know YayBeads and Judy:
What would you like us to know about you?
I got in to stones by accident, but now I’m hooked. Two years ago, I went to Tucson and it was my idea of Heaven. Picking through hundreds of boxes of stones, and being able to buy the best, finding new and interesting material, walking down an aisle (determined to leave without buying ONE MORE THING) and doing a double-take on a strand of focal beads. I can buy what strikes my eye and know that it will go to a good home. Sometimes I really feel that a particular stone is destined for ONE person. By having an internet shop, the odds increase that the stone will find that particular someone.
What prompted you to open an Etsy Shop?
I’d had an online shop for a few years, but was researching on the Internet how to improve my photographs when I stumbled upon Etsy. I was so impressed with the amount of good information and the camaraderie on the forums that I decided to open a shop.
How did you come up with your shop name?
The hard part was coming up with something not already taken! The family had a brainstorming session and I especially liked YayBeads, because it reflected my personal feelings about my inventory. I had no glimmer of hope it wasn’t already taken. After an Internet search, I checked Etsy, facebook, twitter, etc. and was delighted to find it was!
How would you describe your shop?
I love stones. Several years ago, during a family illness, I did some “eBay therapy” and ended up with quite a cache of lovely stones I had no idea what to do with. Years later, I now only hand select my stones. I just know that I always really like what I select. Since I am very particular about what I buy and only choose the best, I decided to make it a specialty shop. Excellent quality, small quantities. That way, you get what you need and don’t have a lot of unneeded leftovers. I cater to those who makes OOAK or limited edition handcrafted jewelry.
What inspires you?
I have been told I have a psychic gift that points me to select particular stones. All I know is that if there were a mountain of stones, if I buried my hand and pulled out only one, it would be lovely…and probably rare. Especially in the beginning, I would buy a lovely strand and not even know what it was.
Years later I would research its origin and discover it was some rare stone found in only one place in the world. The lapidary teams on Etsy have been extremely helpful in identifying stones for me and I have learned a huge amount over the years.
One of this things that most surprised me in my education, was that there are many semi-precious stones that are much more rare than diamonds. Mother Nature is an amazing artist and the myriad of colors, textures, and shapes never cease to amaze me.
Which item in your shop is your favorite to make/find?
That is a hard question because I love them all (that’s why I chose them!), but I have to admit a special fondness for the Royal Imperial Jasper. (see photo to the left)
The natural colors are so perfectly complimentary and seem hand-painted by Mother Nature!
If you were shipwrecked on a desert island, what are the 3 crafty must haves?
Since I wouldn’t be able to shop for stones, I would love to have the time and equipment to polish my own. For starters, I guess I’d need a computer to converse with the Etsy lapidary teams find out what equipment I would need! Like any pirate, I wouldn’t mind just sifting my jewels through my hands.
Where else can we find you?
I have just launched YayBeads.com which will soon include my blog.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
